Heating your home for less
The cost of heating your home is going through the roof. Here are six simple ways to save money on your heating bill.
  • Keep heat inside your home by closing drapes at night and opening them during the day to let the sun shine in. Cut heat loss by caulking and weather-stripping doors and windows.

  • Set the temperature as low as you can and still be comfortable. Use a programmable thermostat to automatically set a lower temperature at night and when no one is home.

  • Check the filters in your furnace at least once a month to improve the unit's efficiency.

  • Close the damper on your fireplace when not in use to prevent heat from escaping out the chimney.

  • Use ventilating fans only as needed. Fans in bathrooms or above stoves can blow away a houseful of warm air in just one hour.

  • Ensure that your walls and ceilings are properly insulated to keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
